HOBO data loggers are being used to monitor environmental conditions on  the highest mountain in Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro

The study is led by Dr Nick Pepin of the School of Environment and Life Sciences, University of Portsmouth, with support from the Royal Geographical Society, NERC (Natural Environmental Research Council), NSF (National Science Foundation), the University of Portsmouth, the Mountain Research Initiative, and Temnpcon Instrumentartion Ltd.

The project website, The “Melting Snows” of Kilimanjaro, describes how 24 HOBO U23-001A Pro V2 temperature and humidity data loggers, each installed 1.5 metres above ground level, form a line across the mountain from Moshi in the south-west (990m) over the summit crater (5803m) to the Rongai gate (2009m) in the north-east.

Why temperature and humidity monitoring matters on Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro has long been associated with changing snow and ice conditions. Monitoring local temperature and relative humidity helps researchers understand the environmental conditions around the mountain and build a more detailed picture of how these conditions change over time.

Accurate environmental data is especially important where decisions, models or long-term observations depend on consistent measurements. A single reading can be useful, but repeated measurements over weeks, months or years can help reveal patterns that would otherwise be missed.

That is where data loggers such as the HOBO U23-001A are particularly valuable. Rather than relying on manual spot checks, a data logger can be deployed in the field to record measurements automatically at defined intervals.

HOBO U23-001A: designed for outdoor temperature and humidity logging

The HOBO U23-001 is a weatherproof temperature and relative humidity data logger designed for outdoor and demanding environmental monitoring applications.

It is commonly used where users need dependable temperature and humidity records from locations such as:

  • Environmental research sites

  • Agricultural and horticultural locations

  • Outdoor test areas

  • Building and energy monitoring projects

  • Storage and preservation environments

  • Remote field monitoring stations.

The Kilimanjaro project is a strong example of the type of work for which HOBO loggers are often selected: long-term environmental measurement in a real-world field setting.

Choosing HOBO data loggers for research and monitoring

For anyone planning a monitoring project, the Kilimanjaro example highlights several important points.

First, the logger must be suitable for the environment. Outdoor deployments require equipment that can cope with changing conditions and continue recording reliably.

Second, the measurement parameters must match the project. In this case, temperature and relative humidity were key variables. In other projects, users may need to monitor water temperature, soil moisture, light, carbon dioxide, voltage, current, pulse inputs or multiple sensors at once.

Third, data retrieval and analysis matter. A logger is only useful if the recorded data can be downloaded, reviewed and interpreted in a practical way.

HOBO data loggers from Tempcon

Tempcon supplies a wide range of HOBO data loggers for temperature, humidity, water, energy, weather and other environmental monitoring applications.

The HOBO U23-001A has now been supersceded by the HOBO MX2301A - offering wireless access to your data directly from your phone, tablet, or Windows computer, plus optional cloud data storage and remote monitoring.  It is designed for weatherproof temperature and humidity logging and is well suited to environmental monitoring projects where reliable field data is required.

Whether you are monitoring a research site, building environment, storage facility, agricultural location or outdoor test area, Tempcon can help identify the most suitable HOBO logger and accessories for your application.

Part the LI-COR environmental monitoring portfolio

HOBO data loggers are part of the environmental monitoring range from LI-COR, a manufacturer of scientific instruments and monitoring systems for environmental research.

LI-COR recently acquired Onset, the owner of the HOBO brand, bringing HOBO data loggers into a wider portfolio of environmental measurement technologies. This is particularly relevant for organisations looking for data logging products with established use in research, climate monitoring, water management, agriculture, building performance and field-based environmental studies.
